Do you want a website that will generate hundreds of thousands of dollars? If the answer is yes, then you will want to read the following. Like any business venture the key to profitable web design begins with planning. Planning is almost always undervalued as the focus is to get the website online in the most timely fashion possible. Your website must be laid out in an organized fashion. Therefore, organizing your pages into themed based sections is extremely important.
The main reason that organizing your website into themed based pages is so crucial is that adverting revenue is the main source of income for more than 50% of websites. Whether its Adsense, Yahoo Search Marketing or Banner Adverting, the key is to drive targeted traffic to various themed based pages. When marketing advertising space on your website to potential clients, you will have a much easier time convincing them to advertise on your web site if you can convince them that only potential buyers will be viewing their ads.
If we use the example of a European travel site, the implementation of themed based pages would result in a real estate rental section, a tour section, an entertainment section and a currency conversion section. This would result in you having the ability to market advertising space on your currency conversion space to financial institutions, space on your real estate portion to realtors and space on your entertainment section to theaters and museums. The benefit to your potential clients is that only customers who are interested in currency conversion will be viewing their ads versus a visitor who is only interested in the weather and could care less about currency conversion.
With the internet being utilized more and more, businesses are realizing that newspaper and magazine advertising is not nearly as effective as advertising on websites which drive targeted traffic to their ads. A carefully planned web site will allow you to lead your visitors to all of your revenue generating pages and will result in an extremely profitable website.

As a web designer, I have a personal interest in a new trend which threatens to put me and my kind out of business. That “threat” is Web Design Templates. In short they are ready-made web design products which can be used as a basis for a fast and high-quality website. You usually receive a Photoshop file (.psd), Flash file (.fla), HTML files with your tables and initial scripting already complete, fonts, sounds and anything else which may be part of the website design.
A couple of years ago these templates were a small issue in the world of design. Most of them were of minimal quality and there were not all that many out there. Now some of the “big players” like BG Website Templates, The Discount Directory and Plantillas De Website are supplying spectacular designs which include 3D animated Flash, multimedia and dynamic programming for prices comparable to dinner out. Many of these templates rival even the best custom designer’s work. So how can we (the humble designer) survive?
- My first suggestion is to “aim high”. By that I mean start targeting a “higher end” clientele. Most companies of any size will not want to have a website design which may well be found on dozens of other websites around the world.
- These templates, while very impressive, are still templates. They still require the knowledge and skills of a professional for them to function to their full potential. So consider promoting your customization skills to those clients who are looking for a low cost solution. You can still make a pretty profit on the website and you’ll get it done much faster. Another advantage to this method is that the client has already chosen a design, so the process of “back and forth” designing is removed.
- Finally, you may choose to directly promote templates on your own website. You may feel that you’re cutting your own wrists, but as mentioned before, the clients who wish to use a template most likely didn’t want to spend the money for your custom work anyway. Once you’ve saved them money on design work by selling them a template, you have a much better chance of upgrading their order with add-ons like chat rooms, help desks and newsletters. In the end you may end up coming out ahead.
Whether or not our careers as designers will survive this competition remains to be seen; but in the meantime it doesn’t hurt to at least become familiar with web templates. Knowing your competition is key to success.

Web Design does not necessarily have to be as complicated as it may seem. With a little ingenuity and some creative work a website with a clever web design can take form. To get started one must think about what they like best about other websites. What is it that they have that your website doesn’t have? What is so special about their site that brings in so much traffic?
If you are looking to have a web design that has great graphics and visual effects that will catch a viewers eye then the first step is to find a template that matches your desired web design. A template is the first step to a web design, it is you skeleton if you will. Finding a template that has all that you want plus the graphics that may suit you best is not too difficult. It just requires you to spend some time on the internet searching through the hundreds of companies that offer template services. In one of those companies you are bound to find something that you like. Not to mention that with the use of a template you can have a uniform professional web design.
Once you have the template picked there is that pesky matter of the content on your web page. A reader will not want to read something that makes them feel that they are reading a school textbook. They are going to want something that is entertaining and feels enjoyable to read.
Easy navigation through the web design will aid in the viewers ease through out the website making it user friendly and pleasant. To do this make room for navigation cues that are on the website directly and in a logical place on the page. For example it is best to have the navigation cues at the top or the bottom of the page as opposed to the middle of the page.
Don’t forget about HTML. That code that does wonders for any website that it is put on. HTML can aid in the efficiency of a web design and help to produce a much more attractive web page. It will can also add to the entertainment of the content by adding color, changing size etc.
Putting all of this together may seem a lot at first. However, breaking it down step by step in the web design process will make designing that website easy, fast and more efficient bringing in the desired traffic. With just a little time you web design can be a fun creative endeavor.
